For the Love of Preloved Bags

Why I Always Buy Preloved Handbags

Buying pre-loved handbags wasn’t a decision I took overnight. It was something that organically happened over a few years. Once I started purchasing pre-owned designer bags - bags that I had lusted over in London’s exclusive department stores and boutiques across the world for years - there was literally no turning back.

Whether the bag is current season or vintage, the quality is often impeccable. Some of these bags have literally been used just once - others have lived a healthy life, with much more to give. Each of our designer bags is authenticated by Entrupy.

Some women hanker after a vintage, soft tactile leather that you can only find in certain brands, on older models. Others seek a distinctive monogram-coated canvas, showcasing a designer brand. Some savvy buyers know exactly what model they want and some view the whole exercise as an investment purchase.

A proportion of customers want the creases and faint scuffs - and are prepared to pay a bit less for exactly that classic look. Because it shows a nonchalance, a studied indifference on behalf of the owner. Especially if it is a designer item: “I own this expensive item and it’s part of my everyday life!”

Does a small ink mark or make-up stain on the inside of the bag really make any difference? Well, it might to your pockets (more bang for your buck) but often not to your actual consciousness, unless of course you are a perfectionist. Some of our designer bags have never, ever been used and still have the tissue wrap and hardware film protection. One thing they all have in common though - they are special.

Our Chanel and Louis Vuitton bag collections are forever evolving from briefcases, wallets and backpacks to hobo and shoulder bags. We’ve been lucky enough to have immaculate, elusive Jane Birkin bags travel through the shop and see a constant rotation of Mulberrys and Burberrys.

Entwined signature leather and chain straps, interlocking CC turn closures, WEB red and green strap features, quilted lambskin and caviar leather, Damier Azur or Damier Ebene canvas: the siren call of fashionistas all over the world.

So, when I buy a designer bag or accept one to showcase in the shop, I look for a few things:

  • Authentication
  • Scuffs, marks, wear and tear (and then price accordingly)
  • Packaging (whether it comes with box, dustbag, authentication cards)
  • Serial numbers (on certain designer brands)
  • Outstanding features (detachable, adjustable straps, protective base feet, top handle, zip and slip pockets, type of closure)

All of the above doesn’t make a bag but it can make a difference to the buyer. As a seller of preloved and pre-owned designer and luxury handbags - it’s important for me to identify as many details of each bespoke bag as possible.

Next of course is the big question - bags or shoes? I personally teeter between the two but a lot of my friends are firmly in one camp or the other. Whatever your choice - it is absolutely clear that bags are an imperative part of any woman’s hanging or floor space (depending on how many you have) and I can’t see that changing…ever.

Come and have a look in the shop or browse the website for the latest gems.
